The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a



* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of

  Parts of northern and central North Carolina

  Parts of extreme southern Virginia



* Effective this Saturday afternoon and evening from 200 PM until

  800 PM EDT.



* Primary threats include...

  Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible

  Isolated large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible



SUMMARY...A cluster of storms crossing the Appalachians will likely

maintain organization while it moves eastward near and just south of

the Virginia/North Carolina border.  The storm environment favors a

threat of damaging winds and large hail through the afternoon and

into this evening.



The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 45

statute miles north and south of a line from 80 miles west of

Greensboro NC to 40 miles east of Raleigh NC. For a complete

REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are

favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.

Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening

weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible

warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce

tornadoes.

1.5 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60 knots. A
