Half Inch Coverage

Showers and thunderstorms continue to frequent the state thanks to staled out / meandering surface frontal boundaries and small upper troposphere disturbances providing a bit of needed help to fire storms with afternoon heating. The featured chart presents an IEM estimate based on NOAA estimates of the spatial percentage of Iowa receiving at least 0.5 inches of precipitation each day this year. The most recent June rainfall events have been much more isolated than previous events associated with larger scale and more strongly forced storm systems. We will have another such day on Wednesday before a break in precipitation arrives along with very hot temperatures.
